Practical overview
When it fits
Use Promptulate when developing an LLM application in Python that needs model access alongside agent, tool or structured-output features.
Who it is for
- Python developers building applications that use large language models
- Developers creating agents that plan tasks or call external tools
- Teams prototyping LLM applications with documented Streamlit or Gradio examples
Documented uses
- Call a language model through a common Python interface.
- Request structured responses using a Pydantic schema.
- Connect agents to external tools, including search tools.
- Build agent workflows with planning, reasoning and tool invocation.
Requirements & limits
- Model calls use provider/model_name notation, and provider credentials may be required.
- External tool integrations have their own package and credential requirements.
- The quick start documents pip installation and Python examples.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Promptulate and make a model call
Install Promptulate, configure an OpenAI key and send a basic chat request with pne.chat().
Before you start
- A terminal and a Python environment where pip can install packages
- An OpenAI API key
Steps
Install or update the package with the command below.
pip install -U pneSet
OPENAI_API_KEYto your key as an environment variable, or place it in a project-root.envfile.Import
pneand callpne.chat()with a message and a model name, as shown in the Quick Start.
Expected outcome
A model response returned through Promptulate's chat interface.
Guide limitations
- The example depends on a valid OpenAI key and the selected model.
- The guide's example demonstrates a basic chat request, not deployment of an application.
Connect an external search tool to an agent request
Configure the documented LangChain DuckDuckGo search and arXiv tools for use in a Promptulate request.
Before you start
- Promptulate installed
- An OpenAI API key
- The documented packages:
langchain==0.1.5,langchain-community,arxivandduckduckgo-search
Steps
Install the listed tool dependencies.
Set
OPENAI_API_KEYin the environment.Load the
ddg-searchandarxivtools with LangChain'sload_tools().Pass the tools to
pne.chat()with a model name and user message, following the guide's example.
Expected outcome
A Promptulate request configured to use the supplied tools through its ToolAgent workflow.
Guide limitations
- The example uses the specific LangChain package versions and tools listed in the guide.
- Tool output depends on the external tools and model used.
