Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an editor-based prompt workflow is useful for revising, generating or discussing text in Neovim buffers.

Who it is for

  • Neovim users who want prompted text editing or generation without leaving the editor.
  • Developers who want chat sessions and persistent Markdown conversations inside Neovim.
  • Users who prefer to choose explicitly what text is sent to a model or agent endpoint.

Documented uses

  • Rewrite selected text using an instruction.
  • Generate and append text with a visual selection as context.
  • Add comments to a function.
  • Ask questions in a chat buffer and keep conversations as Markdown files.
  • Use configured hosted or local model providers from Neovim.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • Requires Neovim 0.11 or later.
  • At least one provider must be explicitly configured.
  • The README lists OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI, OpenAI-compatible endpoints and Ollama among provider options.
  • Chat context includes the full buffer unless hidden comments are used.
  • ripgrep, fzf and Telescope are optional; fzf requires ripgrep.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Parrot.nvim with a provider

Install the plugin and configure at least one provider so it is available in Neovim.

Before you start

  • Neovim 0.11 or later
  • A provider to configure
  • A plugin manager such as lazy.nvim or Packer, or Neovim’s native package system

Steps

  1. Install parrot.nvim using one of the documented methods: lazy.nvim, Packer or the native package system.

  2. Configure parrot.nvim in Neovim and add at least one provider under its providers setting.

  3. Provide the chosen provider’s configuration, including its API key and model details where required by that provider.

Expected outcome

Parrot.nvim is installed and has at least one explicitly configured provider.

Guide limitations

  • This setup guide does not cover a complete provider configuration for every supported service.
Source-based practical guide

Start a chat in a Neovim buffer

Prompt a configured language-model provider through a Parrot.nvim chat buffer.

Before you start

  • Neovim 0.11 or later
  • Parrot.nvim installed and a provider explicitly configured

Steps

  1. Run :PrtChatNew to open a chat buffer, or :PrtChatToggle to reopen the last one.

  2. Write a question or instruction after the user prefix in the buffer.

  3. Trigger a response with the default insert-mode mapping or :PrtChatRespond.

  4. Read the streamed response in the buffer; press s to stop generation if needed.

Expected outcome

The provider’s response is streamed into the chat buffer, which can be saved as a Markdown file in the configured directory.

Guide limitations

  • The entire buffer is sent as context unless hidden comments are used.
  • The guide assumes a working provider configuration.
