Practical overview

When it fits

Use Lightnlp for learning and experimenting with NLP task implementations, especially when you can supply your own data and want to examine the training, evaluation and prediction workflow.

Who it is for

  • Developers learning or experimenting with NLP model implementations.
  • Computer developers from other fields who want to practice NLP task workflows.

Documented uses

  • Train and evaluate a named-entity-recognition model using BIO-tagged data.
  • Experiment with text classification, sentiment analysis, translation, text generation, parsing or summarization implementations.
  • Load a saved model to make predictions or test model results through the included simple Flask feature.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The public repository specifies the Apache-2.0 license. Installation instructions use pip and require PyTorch and torchtext as separate dependencies.

  • The README frames the project as exploratory rather than suitable for enterprise or production use.
  • The examples expect users to provide task data; pretrained vectors are optional in the NER example, and trained models or datasets are not supplied for direct download across tasks.
  • The maintainers report running it in two specific Windows/Manjaro and Python/PyTorch environments and make no compatibility guarantee for other setups.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Train and test a named-entity recognition model

Use the documented NER example to train a model, load its saved files and evaluate it on a dataset.

Before you start

  • Python environment with PyTorch and torchtext installed separately.
  • Lightnlp installed with pip.
  • BIO-formatted NER training data; a development set and pretrained character vectors are optional in the example.

Steps

  1. Install Lightnlp with the command below and install PyTorch and torchtext as described in the README.

    Documented command
    pip install lightNLP
  2. Create an NER object with from lightnlp.sl import NER and provide the path to the BIO training data.

  3. Call ner_model.train(...), optionally setting development-data, vector, save and TensorBoard log paths.

  4. Load the saved model with ner_model.load('./ner_saves') and evaluate a dataset using ner_model.test(train_path).

Expected outcome

A trained and saved NER model that can be loaded and evaluated; the README also demonstrates text prediction and TensorBoard logging.

Guide limitations

  • The README characterizes the framework as exploratory rather than enterprise or production software.
  • It says model parameters are not finely tuned and does not supply ready-to-download trained models or datasets for every task.
  • The maintainers list only Windows 10 with Python 3.6/PyTorch 1.3 and Manjaro with Python 3.7/PyTorch 1.3 as environments where it ran.
