Practical overview
When it fits
Use CloneTTS when you want local Android speech synthesis for long-form reading, particularly if you want to create a voice from a short recording or connect a reader through system TTS or the local HTTP server.
Who it is for
- Android users who want to listen to books or long passages with a custom voice.
- Readers using Android apps such as Legado or Moon+ Reader that can use the system TTS engine.
- Users configuring a reader to send text to CloneTTS’s local HTTP server.
Documented uses
- Create and activate a voice from a short speech sample.
- Read books and long text aloud without an internet connection.
- Connect a compatible reader through Android system TTS or CloneTTS’s local HTTP service.
- Adjust speech rate and volume or correct pronunciation with substitution rules.
Requirements & limits
- Voice creation requires a one-to-three-second sample and an exact transcript; the README cautions that mismatches can reduce synthesis quality.
- Real-time performance depends on the device. The project recommends checking its benchmark and says an RTF above 1 may mean synthesis is not smooth in real time.
- NPU acceleration is listed only for specified Snapdragon devices: 8 Gen 2, 8 Gen 3, 8 Elite and 8 Elite Gen 5.
- Background reading may require changing Android battery and task-management settings, which vary by device.
- The local HTTP service supports GET and POST, while Android system TTS is the wider-compatibility route described by the project. The README names Legado and Moon+ Reader as examples.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create and activate a custom voice
Add a voice from a short speech sample for use in CloneTTS.
Before you start
- An Android device with CloneTTS installed.
- A clear one-to-three-second recording of a single sentence, recorded in the app or available as a local audio file.
- The exact transcript of the recorded sentence.
Steps
Open the Voices tab, open the More options menu and choose Add Voice.
Record a sample with Studio Recording or select an external local audio file.
Enter the words spoken in the sample exactly. The README recommends num_steps 2 for speed, or 4 for higher quality at slower synthesis.
Choose Save & Enable, then tap the voice card to make it active.
Expected outcome
The custom voice is added to the voice list and selected as the active voice.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that transcript mismatches can severely degrade synthesis quality.
- The sample should be a single clear sentence without background noise.
- Higher num_steps can slow synthesis; values above 8 are stated not to improve quality further.
Set CloneTTS as an Android system reading voice
Use CloneTTS to read text from a compatible reader app through Android system text-to-speech.
Before you start
- An Android device with CloneTTS installed.
- A reader app that offers a read-aloud function; the README names Legado and Moon+ Reader as examples.
Steps
In phone settings, search for TTS Settings or Text-to-Speech Output.
Set CloneTTS as the preferred engine.
Open a reader app and start its Read Aloud function.
Expected outcome
The reader app can request speech through the Android system TTS engine, with variable speech rate supported.
Guide limitations
- The README notes that background reading may require changing battery optimization to Unrestricted or allowing background activity; keeping the app in recent tasks may also depend on the phone brand.
