Practical overview
When it fits
Use Applio when a voice-conversion workflow needs an existing recording and voice model, or when working with its separate live-voice, speech-generation or model-training workflows.
Who it is for
- People converting recorded speech or isolated vocals with a voice model.
- Users who want to change microphone voice live or generate speech from text.
- People preparing recordings and training custom voice models.
- Developers using Gradio workflows, Python development or cloud notebooks.
Documented uses
- Convert a recording while retaining its words, rhythm and pitch contour.
- Change a microphone voice in real time.
- Generate speech from text and convert the resulting speech.
- Prepare voice recordings, train a model and export it.
- Process multiple recordings with the same model and settings.
Requirements & limits
The documentation describes Desktop and Gradio interfaces, source installation, and cloud notebooks. Hardware and model requirements vary by task.
- Conversion changes speaker characteristics but retains the source words, rhythm and pitch contour; it does not generate a new performance from text.
- Song conversion should use an isolated vocal rather than the full music mix.
- Voice models require matching embedder settings; a matching .index may also be supplied.
- Model training requires substantially more compute than file conversion.
- Desktop and Gradio have different interfaces, installation steps and release versions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Convert a first audio file
Convert a recording using an installed Applio interface and a compatible voice model.
Before you start
- Install Applio and finish engine setup.
- Add a voice model; use its matching .index if available.
- Have a voice recording and know the model’s training embedder.
Steps
Open Convert Audio in Desktop or Inference in Gradio.
Select the voice model and matching index, if available, and match the embedder.
Upload a recording, choose an export format, and start conversion.
Listen to the result; download or otherwise copy audio you want to keep.
Expected outcome
An audio file converted to the selected voice model.
Guide limitations
- Results depend on hardware and model; speed and memory requirements vary.
- For a song, isolate the vocal before conversion.
- Desktop working outputs are temporary.
- Use recordings and models you have permission to use.
