3ID-Connect

3ID-Connect is a TypeScript library that lets browser applications access 3ID account management through an iframe. It uses a DID provider for authentication and key-management operations, with the parent application communicating with the iframe service over RPC.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a browser application needs to connect wallet-authenticated users to 3ID account and key management, rather than implementing the iframe-based account interface itself.

Who it is for

  • Developers building browser applications for Ceramic.
  • Teams that want users to authenticate with a blockchain wallet and manage 3ID keys or application permissions.

Documented uses

  • Connect an Ethereum wallet provider and address to a 3ID connection flow.
  • Give users an interface to manage and link 3ID keys.
  • Request and manage application permissions for 3ID keys.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The documented connection flow requires an Ethereum provider and an address.
  • The parent app and iframe communicate through RPC; the DID provider handles most operations.
  • The basic example documents the connection call, while application-specific setup may still be required.
  • Published packages are licensed under Apache-2.0 or MIT; UI dependencies may use other licenses.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Connect a browser app to 3ID using an Ethereum wallet provider

Add the documented 3ID connection call to an application using @3id/connect.

Before you start

  • A browser application
  • The @3id/connect package
  • An Ethereum provider and an address

Steps

  1. Install the package with npm install @3id/connect.

  2. Import EthereumAuthProvider and ThreeIdConnect from @3id/connect.

  3. Create an EthereumAuthProvider with the Ethereum provider and an address.

  4. Create a ThreeIdConnect instance and call connect with the authentication provider.

Expected outcome

The application invokes the documented 3ID connection flow using the supplied wallet provider and address.

Guide limitations

  • The example shows the connection call; application-specific setup may also be needed.
