Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Sotopia when the work requires simulated social interactions and evaluation of social agents, rather than a general-purpose multi-agent workflow.

Who it is for

  • Researchers studying social behavior and performance in AI agents.
  • Developers creating character-driven social interaction simulations.
  • Teams exploring human-AI interaction in structured scenarios.

Documented uses

  • Run agents through social tasks with varied characters and backgrounds.
  • Explore interactions where information is incomplete and exchanges are asynchronous.
  • Evaluate social-agent performance in a shared simulation environment.
  • Set up human-AI interaction experiments.

Requirements & limits

The package supports Python 3.10 and above and requires Redis Stack. Official documentation provides a Python API section.

  • Redis Stack is a required dependency.
  • The documented quick-start example assigns models to the environment and two agents; adapting it requires model configuration and relevant provider credentials.
  • Setup can use an interactive installer or a manual installation-from-source route.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the Sotopia package

Install the package and configure its required Redis Stack dependency.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10 or above
  • Redis Stack

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install sotopia
  2. Run sotopia install for the interactive setup, or use the documented manual Redis Stack setup route.

  3. Set REDIS_OM_URL to the Redis connection URL, such as redis://localhost:6379.

Expected outcome

The package installation and Redis connection setting are in place for Sotopia use.

Guide limitations

  • The documented setup requires Redis Stack.
  • This covers setup only; it does not establish that an example has run successfully.
