Practical overview
When it fits
Use MassGen when a task benefits from comparing and refining work from multiple agents rather than relying on a single response.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to run multi-agent model workflows from a terminal.
- Users who want several agents to iteratively assess and refine responses to a task.
Documented uses
- Run multiple AI agents against the same user task.
- Let agents observe, critique and build on one another's work across refinement cycles.
- Select a response through agent voting.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents installation through pip or uv and requires Python 3.11 or later. Setup can configure API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI; credentials are needed for the selected model backends.
- Quickstart supports configuring one to five agents and asks users to choose a backend or model for each.
- The default display is an interactive terminal interface with a real-time timeline of agent activity.
- Docker setup is offered for code execution but is not presented as required for every run.
- The repository identifies the project as open source under Apache 2.0.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install MassGen and create a quickstart configuration
Install the CLI, configure API access and use quickstart to create a configuration and enter the interactive terminal interface.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- API credentials for the model backends selected during setup
Steps
Install MassGen with pip, or create and activate a uv virtual environment and install it with uv.
Run the command below to configure API keys; Docker and skill installation are offered as setup options.
uv run massgen --setupRun the command below and choose the number of agents and a backend or model for each.
uv run massgen --quickstartReview the generated configuration and proceed to the interactive terminal interface.
Expected outcome
A ready-to-use configuration is created and MassGen launches in interactive terminal mode.
Guide limitations
- API credentials must be configured for the selected backends.
- Docker is offered as an optional setup choice for code execution; the guide does not require selecting it.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Massgen | Run multiple AI agents against the same user task. | CLI | The repository documents installation through pip or uv and requires Python 3.11 or later. Setup can configure API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI; credentials are needed for the selected model backends. |
| Langchain Multi Agents Boilerplate | Route incoming football questions to model and agent workflows according to task complexity. | Web | The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. Running the application requires OpenAI and Groq API keys and a Redis server. |
| Owl | Coordinate multiple agents to assist with a real-world task. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server |
