Bitcoin Elixir

Bitcoin Elixir is an Elixir library for Bitcoin protocol and script operations, accompanied by a work-in-progress full-node implementation. It parses and serializes protocol messages, provides a basic script interpreter, connects to and accepts connections from peers, and can sync blockchain data to PostgreSQL or temporary memory storage.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it as a development and learning reference when working with Bitcoin protocol or script operations in Elixir, while accounting for its incomplete, evolving implementation.

Who it is for

  • Elixir developers building or exploring Bitcoin protocol tools.
  • Developers studying peer connections and blockchain synchronization through an experimental node implementation.

Documented uses

  • Parse and serialize Bitcoin protocol messages.
  • Experiment with basic Bitcoin script interpretation.
  • Connect to or accept connections from Bitcoin peers.
  • Sync blockchain data to PostgreSQL or temporary memory storage.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and invites contributions. The supplied repository metadata does not identify a license.

  • The project labels itself work in progress and not suitable for any kind of use.
  • The basic script interpreter is incomplete; the README reports 1,103 of 1,170 Bitcoin Core script-test cases.
  • The README describes libsecp256k1 as optional and requiring C++ compilation; without it, Erlang's :crypto module is used.
  • Node configuration can specify a local peer, and storage can use PostgreSQL or temporary memory.
  • The project is not intended to be a wallet.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure node startup and a local peer

Set the documented development configuration to enable the node and direct its connections to a local peer.

Before you start

  • An Elixir project using bitcoin-elixir
  • Access to the project's dev.exs configuration

Steps

  1. In dev.exs, uncomment the node configuration line shown in the README.

  2. To connect only to a local node, set the node's connect list to the documented loopback address.

Expected outcome

The development configuration enables node startup and can specify a local peer address.

Guide limitations

  • The project is described as work in progress and not suitable for use.
  • The README describes configuration, not a verified node run or successful synchronization.
