Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a self-hosted dashboard for selected crypto assets and are prepared to configure Docker, a CoinMarketCap API key and the app’s environment variables.
Who it is for
- Crypto holders who want a centrally managed view of their selected assets.
- Self-hosting users comfortable configuring a Docker-based application and CoinMarketCap API access.
Documented uses
- Monitor the current value of selected cryptocurrencies.
- Record purchases and use them to display an overall portfolio value.
- View cryptocurrency price charts.
- Convert price data from USD into a selected target currency.
Requirements & limits
The documented deployment requires creating a superuser to access the admin panel and add tracked cryptocurrencies and purchases.
- Price data is polled from CoinMarketCap’s REST API and stored in the application database.
- CoinMarketCap request points constrain polling frequency; multiple tracked cryptocurrencies can increase points consumed per request.
- Docker and docker-compose are the recommended deployment route; the README describes manual component installation as tedious and does not detail it.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Crypto Tracker with Docker
Configure the documented Docker deployment and prepare the app’s admin account and tracked assets.
Before you start
- Docker and docker-compose
- A CoinMarketCap API key
- Environment values for SECRET_KEY, POSTGRES_PASSWORD, SITE_HOSTNAME and ALLOWED_HOSTS
- A TARGET_CURRENCY value if local-currency conversion is wanted
Steps
Rename dotenv-sample to .env and set the listed environment variables, including COINMARKET_KEY.
Move docker/docker-compose to the project root and docker/rebuild-shortcut to rebuild.
Make rebuild executable and run it.
Create a superuser with the documented docker/manage-shortcut command, sign in to /admin, then add cryptocurrencies and purchase records.
Expected outcome
A Docker-deployed dashboard configured with tracked cryptocurrencies and, if entered, purchase amounts for portfolio calculations.
Guide limitations
- The README recommends a reverse proxy or web application firewall to handle SSL certificates.
- CoinMarketCap request limits can require longer polling intervals, especially when querying multiple cryptocurrencies.
