Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when learning the components of a The Graph subgraph or looking for a concrete NFT collection example to adapt.
Who it is for
- Developers learning how to create a first The Graph subgraph.
- NFT builders who want an example of indexing collection metadata and owner relationships for GraphQL queries.
Documented uses
- Understand how a subgraph structures blockchain data for querying.
- Initialize a subgraph project from a contract and generate starter code.
- Model NFT metadata and owner relationships in a GraphQL schema.
- Find a query example for the Fame Lady Squad subgraph.
Requirements & limits
The workshop repository is public and described as open-source. Its tutorial says to sign up to The Graph Hosted Service with GitHub to create a subgraph there.
- The demonstrated project is specific to Fame Lady Squad and its IPFS-stored metadata.
- The tutorial uses The Graph CLI, GraphQL schema definitions, AssemblyScript mappings and a YAML subgraph configuration.
- The repository links to a query for the example subgraph and to its separate project code.
- The guide presents setup steps, while deployment is a later stage requiring the generated access token.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a subgraph project from a contract
Create a Hosted Service subgraph and initialize its local project using the workshop’s documented CLI steps.
Before you start
- A GitHub account for signing up to The Graph Hosted Service.
- The Graph CLI installed with npm.
- The target contract address and its relevant event/data model.
Steps
In The Graph Hosted Service, create a subgraph from the dashboard and save the access token provided for a later deployment.
Install The Graph CLI with the command below.
npm install -g @graphprotocol/graph-cliInitialize from a contract with
graph init --from-contract --contract-name --index-events, then provide the prompted project details.
Expected outcome
A locally initialized subgraph project with generated starting code based on the contract and indexed events.
Guide limitations
- These steps cover project setup, not deployment or a verified successful run.
- The workshop’s concrete example targets Fame Lady Squad; another collection requires adapting its data sources, schema and mappings.
- The tutorial selects Hosted Service for its IPFS-metadata example and describes the access token as needed for a later deployment.
