Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when the application or content you want to make searchable or conversational lives in Squeak/Smalltalk, and you can configure access to the OpenAI API for the features you need.
Who it is for
- Squeak/Smalltalk developers adding semantic search or question-answering to Squeak content.
- Developers who want to use OpenAI conversations, embeddings, or speech features from a Squeak application.
Documented uses
- Search a Squeak document corpus by meaning rather than only matching text.
- Build a retrieval-augmented question-answering feature over Squeak content.
- Add model-backed conversations, text completion, summarization, or question-answering to a Squeak application.
- Rank Squeak objects against a natural-language query.
Requirements & limits
The documented setup uses a Squeak image and an OpenAI API key for most functionality. OpenAI API use is not free.
- The package targets Squeak/Smalltalk rather than a general-purpose hosted search service.
- The OpenAI API client supports chat completions, embeddings, and speech transcription and synthesis.
- The project says it is still under development; Help Browser and mailing-list search integrations are experimental.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install SemanticText in a Squeak image
Load the package into a Squeak environment and configure its OpenAI API key.
Before you start
- A current Squeak Trunk image is recommended; Squeak 6.0 has limited support.
- An OpenAI API key for most package functionality.
Steps
Open a workspace in the Squeak image.
Evaluate the documented Metacello script with baseline
SemanticText, repositorygithub://hpi-swa-lab/Squeak-SemanticText:main, andget; load.Paste the API key into the
OpenAI API Keypreference.
Expected outcome
The SemanticText package is loaded and its OpenAI-backed functionality has an API key configured.
Guide limitations
- Most functionality is based on the OpenAI API, which is not free to use.
- Squeak 6.0 support is described as limited.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squeak Semantictext | Search a Squeak document corpus by meaning rather than only matching text. | Self-hosted | The documented setup uses a Squeak image and an OpenAI API key for most functionality. OpenAI API use is not free. |
| Langsearch | Crawl website or local data for a knowledge base. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | |
| Hybrid Search Rag | Combine document retrieval and language-model generation in a configurable workflow. |
