Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to create prompt-based texture and material assets as part of a Unity project workflow.
Who it is for
- Unity creators who want to generate material and texture assets from natural-language descriptions.
- Teams working with URP or HDRP materials who want prompt-based generation within the editor.
Documented uses
- Describe a desired material and texture in a prompt.
- Select a model and texture image options, then generate assets in Unity.
- Save generated textures and materials into the project’s Assets/T2M Materials folder.
Requirements & limits
The workflow requires an OpenAI account and API key. The project is public and licensed under MIT. GPT-4 and DALL·E 3 may not be available to every user.
- An OpenAI API key is required for model-backed generation.
- The README documents URP and HDRP support; URP may require importing Editor Coroutines.
- The project lists metallic, smoothness, roughness, and additional shader support as future work rather than current functionality.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate a material in a Unity project
Install the package, configure its OpenAI key and generate a prompt-based material and texture.
Before you start
- A Unity project
- An OpenAI account and API key
- For URP, Editor Coroutines imported through Package Manager if not already available
Steps
Download the .unitypackage from the repository’s Releases section and import it into the Unity project.
Enter the OpenAI API key in Project Settings under T2M.
In the Project window, right-click and choose Create, then T2M.
Describe the desired material and texture, choose a model and image size, and choose quality if using DALL·E 3.
Click Generate; the resulting textures and materials are saved in Assets/T2M Materials.
Expected outcome
Generated textures and materials are saved in the Unity project’s Assets/T2M Materials folder.
Guide limitations
- GPT-4 and DALL·E 3 may not be available to all users.
- An AI response may be in a format the tool cannot parse; the project recommends trying Generate again.
