Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Stminsights after fitting STM models, when the model objects, effect estimates and fitting input object have been saved in an RData file for inspection.

Who it is for

  • Researchers and analysts working with fitted Structural Topic Models in R.
  • Teams that want to inspect STM models and effect estimates through a browser-based Shiny interface.

Documented uses

  • Import saved STM models and effect estimates from an RData file for interactive analysis.
  • Review and visualize fitted Structural Topic Models after model fitting.
  • Store effect estimates in a tidy data frame with the get_effects() helper.

Requirements & limits

The project documents installation from CRAN or GitHub and launching through R. It also describes placing the app file on a Shiny Server.

  • The app analyzes existing fitted models; the README describes STM fitting as a preceding workflow stage.
  • The uploaded RData file must include one or more stm objects, one or more estimateEffect objects, and the out object used to fit the models.
  • GitHub installation on Windows requires Rtools setup.
  • The Shiny Server instructions cover placing app.R in a server directory, not server configuration.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install and launch the Shiny app

Install Stminsights in R and open its interactive STM inspection app.

Before you start

  • R environment
  • For Windows GitHub installation, Rtools must be properly set up.

Steps

  1. Install from CRAN with install.packages('stminsights'), or install the development version with devtools::install_github('cschwem2er/stminsights').

  2. Load the package with library(stminsights).

  3. Launch the app with run_stminsights().

Expected outcome

The Shiny app launches in a browser and is ready for a .RData model file.

Guide limitations

  • The app requires a .RData file containing one or more stm objects, one or more estimateEffect objects, and the out object used to fit the models; preparing that file is a separate step.
Source-based practical guide

Deploy the app files to Shiny Server

Place the provided Shiny application file in a Shiny Server directory.

Before you start

  • Access to a Shiny Server and its server directory
  • The Stminsights package files, including inst/app/app.R

Steps

  1. Locate app.R in the package's inst/app directory.

  2. Place app.R in a folder in the Shiny Server directory.

Expected outcome

The application file is placed in the server directory as described by the project.

Guide limitations

  • The README does not describe server configuration or operational steps, so this guidance covers file placement only.
