Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Weaviate when an application needs a database-backed retrieval layer that combines vector similarity with object data and filters. Choose the embedding approach—integrated vectorization or precomputed vectors—based on where the application already produces embeddings.

Who it is for

  • Teams building retrieval-augmented generation systems that need a searchable source of relevant records.
  • Developers implementing semantic or image search, recommendations, chatbots or content classification.
  • Engineers choosing between generated-at-import embeddings and vectors computed by another service.

Documented uses

  • Store application objects alongside vectors and retrieve similar items.
  • Combine semantic or vector search with keyword matching and structured filters.
  • Provide a retrieval backend for RAG, recommendations and search applications.

Requirements & limits

The repository describes Weaviate as open source and lists Docker, Kubernetes and Weaviate Cloud deployment options.

  • Embedding supply: use an integrated vectorizer at import or provide precomputed embeddings.
  • Integration: REST, gRPC and GraphQL APIs are listed, with client libraries for Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, Go and C#/.NET.
  • Deployment: the project lists Docker, Kubernetes and Weaviate Cloud, with additional installation documentation for AWS and GCP.
  • The documented local quickstart uses Docker plus a separate Model2Vec inference service.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up local semantic search with Docker and Python

Start a local Weaviate instance with a Model2Vec embedding service, add text objects and query by meaning.

Before you start

  • Docker Desktop
  • Python and pip
  • The Weaviate Docker image and Model2Vec inference image named in the repository example

Steps

  1. Create a Docker Compose configuration with Weaviate and the Model2Vec inference service, using the documented ports and environment settings.

  2. Start both services with the command below.

    Documented command
    docker compose up -d
  3. Install the Python client with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install -U weaviate-client
  4. Use the documented Python pattern to connect locally, create a text collection with the Model2Vec vectorizer, insert objects and run a near-text query.

Expected outcome

A local database collection containing text objects that can be queried by semantic similarity.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe follows the repository's Model2Vec example; it does not document configuration for every vectorizer or deployment environment.
