Text-to-SQL Copilot

Text-to-SQL Copilot is a Python application that turns natural-language questions about SQLite data into SQL queries, executes them and analyzes the returned results. It uses a local Chroma vector database built from SQLite schema information to retrieve relevant schemas, and accesses Google’s flan-t5-xxl model through the Hugging Face Inference API.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want to explore SQLite data by asking questions in plain language and can work with the repository’s Python setup and Hugging Face model connection.

Who it is for

  • People who want to explore SQLite data without composing every SQL query manually.
  • Developers evaluating a schema-retrieval and text-to-SQL workflow built with LangChain, Chroma and Hugging Face.

Documented uses

  • Ask questions about database contents in natural language.
  • Retrieve relevant database schema context before SQL generation.
  • Run generated SQL against the database and analyze returned results.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The README describes Hugging Face Inference API access as free, and requires a Hugging Face API token for the documented model connection.

  • Setup instructions are based specifically on the Spider dataset; preparation for other database collections is not detailed in the README.
  • The application calls the Hugging Face Inference API for flan-t5-xxl, so use requires an API token.
  • Building the documented schema index is estimated to take 10–15 minutes.
  • The repository is an application with Python setup steps, not a hosted query interface.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the documented Spider dataset workflow

Build the local schema index used to retrieve relevant SQLite schemas for natural-language questions.

Before you start

  • Python 3 and pip3
  • The Spider dataset, downloaded and unzipped
  • Project files from the GitHub repository

Steps

  1. Place the unzipped root spider folder under src/data/raw/.

  2. Install dependencies with pip3 install -r requirements.txt.

  3. Run python3 setup.py to compile database information and build the local Chroma vector database; the README estimates 10–15 minutes.

Expected outcome

The project has compiled database information and a local Chroma vector database for schema retrieval.

Guide limitations

  • The documented setup is specifically based on the Spider dataset.
  • This guide covers setup, not a verified run or deployment.
Source-based practical guide

Configure the Hugging Face model token and start the app

Provide the documented Hugging Face Inference API credential and launch the application to enter a question.

Before you start

  • Python 3 and installed project requirements
  • A Hugging Face API token
  • A completed project setup

Steps

  1. Create a .env file in the repository root.

  2. Add the Hugging Face API token to that file.

  3. Navigate to the src/app directory and run python3 main.py.

  4. Enter a natural-language question when prompted.

Expected outcome

The application starts and accepts a natural-language question for its SQL workflow.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents Google flan-t5-xxl through the Hugging Face Inference API.
  • The guide does not establish correctness of generated SQL or results.
