Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a runnable reference for exploring several Redis vector database patterns against a document collection, rather than a hosted chatbot or turnkey search product.
Who it is for
- Developers learning how Redis vector indexes can support document retrieval.
- Teams prototyping semantic search, hybrid recommendations, caching or RAG patterns with Redis.
Documented uses
- Search a document collection using vector similarity.
- Combine metadata filtering with vector similarity for recommendation results.
- Explore semantic caching for language-model requests.
- Compare chatbot responses with and without retrieved context.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented setup runs the application locally and requires a Redis database and an OpenAI key.
- The application depends on Redis Stack or Redis Enterprise and uses RediSearch vector indexes.
- The README provides pre-generated embeddings; generating them again uses an OpenAI model and requires the corresponding key.
- The included blog data and pre-generated embeddings are stated to be current through October 9, 2023.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and launch the Redis vector demo
Prepare the documented Python application, load its bundled embeddings into Redis and open its Streamlit interface.
Before you start
- Python 3
- A Redis Stack instance or Redis Enterprise database
- The project requirements installed in a virtual environment
- An OpenAI key configured in the .env file
Steps
Start a Redis Stack instance with Docker, or use a Redis Enterprise database.
Clone the repository, create and activate a Python virtual environment, and install dependencies from requirements.txt.
Configure the OpenAI key in .env.
Run the command below to load documents and embeddings and create indexes.
python 3_load_embeddings/load.py -reloadRun
streamlit run 4_ui/0_🔍_Vector_Search.pyto launch the interface.
Expected outcome
A local Streamlit interface for exploring the four documented use cases: vector search, hybrid recommendations, semantic caching and RAG for LLM bots.
Guide limitations
- The README identifies the included blog data and pre-generated embeddings as current through October 9, 2023.
- Refreshing the blog CSV and regenerating embeddings are optional; regenerating requires removing the existing embeddings CSV first.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
