Practical overview
When it fits
Use it for a small educational Bitcoin mining project when you have a supported ESP32 board and want to explore solo-pool mining and display its activity.
Who it is for
- People learning how Bitcoin mining and solo pools work.
- Makers building a small ESP32 mining display.
- Developers adapting the firmware or changing its solo-pool configuration.
Documented uses
- Flash mining firmware to a supported ESP32 board.
- Configure Wi-Fi and a Bitcoin wallet address.
- Connect the device to a solo pool and view mining or network statistics on its screens.
- Inspect activity through compatible pool pages or UART logs.
Requirements & limits
The project describes itself as free and open source. Its flashing instructions use an online firmware tool or downloadable repository binaries.
- Hardware support is board-specific; choose from the repository's supported-board list and use the matching firmware binary.
- A Bitcoin address is required before mining starts.
- Low share difficulty means standard pools may not recognize the miner; the README recommends low-difficulty-share pools.
- The device's screens include NerdMiner mining data, clock-style display and global mining statistics.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure Wi-Fi and a Bitcoin address through the miner access point
Provide the network and wallet details required for mining to start.
Before you start
- A board already programmed with Nerdminer V2 firmware.
- A Wi-Fi network and a Bitcoin address from the selected wallet.
Steps
Connect to the NerdMinerAP access point using the password shown in the README.
Set up the Wi-Fi network.
Enter the Bitcoin address.
Change the access-point password if needed.
Expected outcome
The miner has Wi-Fi and a Bitcoin address configured; the README says mining will not start without the address.
Guide limitations
- The README gives a separate SD-card configuration route for boards with an SD card.
- A custom worker name is described for public-pool.io only.
