Kevlar

Kevlar is a command-line light-client-based RPC proxy for proof-of-stake Ethereum. It synchronizes to a recent beacon-chain header, serves a local RPC endpoint and verifies wallet RPC calls with Merkle inclusion proofs against the latest block header.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Kevlar when connecting an RPC-based wallet to a local endpoint that verifies calls using light-client and Merkle-proof mechanisms.

Who it is for

  • Ethereum wallet users who want RPC responses verified through a locally run proxy.
  • Operators configuring light-client infrastructure for MetaMask or another RPC-based wallet.

Documented uses

  • Run a local Ethereum RPC endpoint for wallet connections.
  • Verify wallet RPC calls with Merkle inclusion proofs against a recent block header.
  • Choose between light and optimistic synchronization modes.
  • Configure the proxy's network, upstream RPC, prover URLs, port or beacon API URL.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • Kevlar is command-line infrastructure that the operator runs; it is not a wallet application.
  • The documented default local endpoint is http://localhost:8546.
  • The CLI lists Ethereum mainnet and Sepolia chain IDs, plus light and optimistic client choices.
  • Configuration options include upstream RPC, prover URLs and beacon-chain API URL.
  • The README describes Optimistic Sync as faster than Light Sync, without providing an independent benchmark.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start Kevlar's local RPC proxy

Install the CLI and start the proxy so a wallet can use its local RPC endpoint.

Before you start

  • Node.js/npm environment for the documented npm installation
  • A compatible Ethereum network; the CLI lists chain IDs 1 and 11155111

Steps

  1. Install the CLI with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm i -g @lightclients/kevlar
  2. Run kevlar.

  3. Add http://localhost:8546 as a local network in MetaMask or another RPC-based wallet.

Expected outcome

Kevlar starts a local RPC endpoint at the documented default address for wallet connections.

Guide limitations

  • The README does not specify all prerequisites or configuration needed for every network or deployment.
  • The documented endpoint and wallet connection steps do not constitute a compatibility guarantee.
