Bert Multi Label Text Classification

Bert Multi Label Text Classification is a Python/PyTorch implementation for multi-label text classification with pretrained BERT and XLNet models. Its repository contains configuration, dataset and data-transformation components, preprocessing, model code, training callbacks, and separate run scripts for BERT and XLNet.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you have labeled text and want a code-based BERT or XLNet fine-tuning workflow for assigning multiple categories to each text.

Who it is for

  • Developers building multi-label text classifiers with Python and PyTorch.
  • Practitioners adapting labeled text datasets to classify messages or documents into overlapping categories.

Documented uses

  • Prepare labeled text for a multi-label classification task.
  • Fine-tune a pretrained BERT or XLNet model on the prepared dataset.
  • Use the BERT test workflow to predict labels for new text.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The README specifies Python dependencies, including PyTorch 1.1+ and transformers 2.5.1.

  • You must download pretrained weights and associated configuration or vocabulary files and place them in the expected repository path.
  • The example workflow uses the BERT uncased base model and the Jigsaw toxic-comment dataset; custom tasks may require adapting task-data handling and configuration.
  • The documented pretrained-model input limit is 512 WordPieces; tokenization can make encoded text longer than the raw text.
  • The repository includes training and prediction stages, but the supplied sample evaluation figures describe its example dataset rather than a guarantee for other tasks.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare and fine-tune the BERT example

Set up the documented BERT workflow and fine-tune it on a prepared labeled-text dataset.

Before you start

  • Python environment with the README-listed dependencies, including PyTorch 1.1+ and transformers 2.5.1.
  • Pretrained BERT model, configuration and vocabulary files.
  • Labeled dataset placed in pybert/dataset, with configuration paths adjusted for the data.

Steps

  1. Download the bert-base-uncased model, configuration and vocabulary files; rename them to pytorch_model.bin, config.json and bert_vocab.txt.

  2. Place those files in pybert/pretrain/bert/base-uncased.

  3. Install pytorch-transformers and place the dataset in pybert/dataset; adapt io.task_data.py if needed and edit the configuration paths.

  4. Run python run_bert.py --do_data to preprocess the data.

  5. Run python run_bert.py --do_train --save_best --do_lower_case to fine-tune BERT.

Expected outcome

The documented preprocessing and BERT fine-tuning stages are configured to produce a trained model and training outputs.

Guide limitations

  • The README’s sample data is the Jigsaw toxic-comment challenge; other datasets may require changes to task-data handling and configuration.
  • The pretrained model has a 512-WordPiece input limit; the README suggests raw text around 128–256 characters as a safer length.
  • This recipe does not include the separate documented testing command or verify results on custom data.
