Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a web presentation layer for an AI service and can provide the service address; use its documented compile workflow when incorporating the frontend into DB-GPT.
Who it is for
- Developers building or configuring a web chat interface for DB-GPT or another AI service.
- Teams that need Markdown and chart presentation in an AI chat frontend.
Documented uses
- Connect a chat interface to an AI service using its API base URL.
- Render structured Markdown responses, including tables, code, links and images.
- Present chart output and AI-oriented labels in the chat UI.
- Compile the frontend for placement in DB-GPT’s static files.
Requirements & limits
The project identifies itself as open source and specifies the MIT License. Local development prerequisites are Node.js 16 or later and npm 8 or later; the documented operating systems are Linux, macOS and Windows.
- The frontend requires an AI service address configured through API_BASE_URL; it is not the backend service.
- The documented stack includes Next.js, Tailwind, React Markdown, Ant Design and AntV G2.
- The repository documents both a local development-server workflow and compilation into DB-GPT static files.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the chat UI for local development
Install the frontend, configure its service address and start its development server.
Before you start
- Node.js 16 or later
- npm 8 or later
- Linux, macOS or Windows
- The address of the AI service to set as API_BASE_URL
Steps
Run npm install to install dependencies.
Copy .env.example to .env.
Set API_BASE_URL in .env to the service address.
Run npm run dev.
Expected outcome
The documented development server starts with the API base address configured.
Guide limitations
- The guide documents frontend setup and development-server startup, not backend setup or a successful connection test.
Compile the frontend for DB-GPT static files
Compile DB-GPT-Web and place its output in DB-GPT’s static files directory.
Before you start
- The DB-GPT-Web project and a DB-GPT directory with the documented relative path
Steps
Run npm run compile.
Copy the contents of out/ to ../dbgpt/app/static.
Expected outcome
The compiled frontend files are placed in DB-GPT’s documented static files directory.
Guide limitations
- The instructions cover compilation and copying; they do not describe DB-GPT server setup or verify the resulting deployment.
