Practical overview
When it fits
Use it as a reference for a PDF question-answering interface or when exploring document ingestion and retrieval patterns. The README’s index-creation step is commented out, so it does not document a complete working retrieval setup.
Who it is for
- People who want to explore question answering over personal PDF documents.
- Developers examining or adapting a Python and Streamlit document-chat application.
Documented uses
- Upload a PDF and ask a question about its contents.
- Extract and split PDF text into overlapping chunks for retrieval-based question answering.
- Use retrieved document text as context for an OpenAI answer-generation call.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies the MIT license. The documented interface includes an OpenAI API-key input.
- The README describes PyMuPDF text extraction, 400-character chunks with 80-character overlap, OpenAI embeddings and LangChain question answering.
- The README describes FAISS similarity search, but comments out the FAISS index-creation step.
- The repository description mentions Pinecone, while the detailed implementation overview describes FAISS; it does not document a completed Pinecone workflow.
- The README includes an installation heading but no substantive installation steps.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Upload a PDF and ask it a question
Use Huxley PDF’s documented interface and question-answering flow to ask about an uploaded PDF.
Before you start
- A PDF file to upload.
- An OpenAI API key; the application sidebar provides an input field for it.
Steps
Enter your OpenAI API key in the sidebar.
Upload a PDF using the file uploader, which accepts PDF files.
Enter a question about the PDF in the question field.
Read the response displayed in the application.
Expected outcome
The application displays a response generated using retrieved document content and the question-answering chain.
Guide limitations
- The README says the FAISS index-creation call is commented out, so the documented retrieval path may not be operational as described.
- The README’s installation section contains no setup instructions.
