Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a RAG project needs a document-to-QA-generation workflow connected to a TaskingAI collection service and a configured language-model endpoint.
Who it is for
- Developers building or maintaining a RAG knowledge base from document collections.
- Teams that want a graphical workflow for generating QA pairs and managing TaskingAI collections.
Documented uses
- Convert supported documents into text chunks and generated QA pairs.
- Preview generated pairs before inserting them into a selected collection.
- Create or select a collection and manage its content through the interface.
- Download collection contents as JSON or upload JSON collection content.
Requirements & limits
The project is published under the Apache-2.0 license. Its documented setup requires local Python dependencies, a TaskingAI system, and configured API endpoints and credentials.
- The documented collection backend is TaskingAI, accessed through a REST API.
- The model is configured through an OpenAI-compatible client; qwen2.5-72b is named in the README example.
- The README lists Python 3.11.5 and pinned package requirements.
- The README documents temporary-file handling and deletion after processing uploaded documents.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the documented RAG-QA-Generator environment
Prepare the project and its TaskingAI and language-model endpoint configuration for local use.
Before you start
- Python 3.11.5 and the README-listed dependencies.
- A TaskingAI system and its API base URL and key.
- A language-model API key and base URL.
Steps
Install and configure TaskingAI using the repository's documented Docker Compose instructions.
Clone the RAG-QA-Generator repository and install its requirements with pip.
Configure the TaskingAI and model endpoint URLs and API credentials in the application.
Start the Streamlit app with
streamlit run AutoQAG.pyand openhttp://localhost:8501.
Expected outcome
The documented local Streamlit interface is available for file processing and knowledge-base management.
Guide limitations
- This covers setup and launch only; it does not verify that any particular endpoint, credential or dependency combination works.
- The README lists pinned dependency versions; consult the project documentation for the full list.
Generate and insert document-based QA pairs
Use the interface workflow described in the README to create QA pairs from supported documents and place them in a collection.
Before you start
- A running, configured application with access to TaskingAI and a language-model endpoint.
- TXT, PDF or DOCX input files.
Steps
Choose the file-upload operation and upload the document or documents.
Select the option to process files and generate QA pairs, then review the displayed preview.
In knowledge-base management, select an existing collection or create one.
Insert the generated QA pairs into the selected collection.
Expected outcome
The interface reports insertion progress and a result summary for the selected collection.
Guide limitations
- The documented workflow requires generated QA pairs before insertion.
- The README describes the interface flow but does not establish the quality of generated pairs.
