Language Pretraining

Language Pretraining is a public Python repository of pretrained Japanese transformer language models and scripts for tokenizer training, dataset creation and model pretraining. It includes BERT, ELECTRA, RoBERTa, DeBERTa and DeBERTaV2 families, with selected BERT and ELECTRA checkpoints available through Hugging Face Transformers.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when selecting Japanese transformer checkpoints or when you need documented code stages for preparing Japanese text and pretraining a model.

Who it is for

  • Japanese NLP practitioners choosing pretrained encoder checkpoints for their own workflows
  • Developers preparing Japanese corpora and building or continuing transformer pretraining
  • Researchers exploring model variants trained on Wikipedia or financial datasets

Documented uses

  • Find Japanese pretrained BERT, ELECTRA, RoBERTa or DeBERTa-family models
  • Load listed checkpoints in a Hugging Face Transformers workflow
  • Train a tokenizer and prepare a Japanese corpus for pretraining
  • Configure single-node or distributed pretraining with the repository’s PyTorch implementation
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and carries an MIT license. Listed pretrained models are made available through Hugging Face Transformers.

  • Selected BERT and ELECTRA checkpoints are described as trained on Wikipedia or financial datasets; choose according to the stated training-data context.
  • The documented tokenizer path uses MeCab with IPAdic and WordPiece; SentencePiece and additional word-tokenizer options are also described.
  • The repository supports distributed training and recommends at least 10G network speed for multi-node training.
  • The README documents model preparation and training stages but does not demonstrate downstream task outcomes.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare a Japanese pretraining dataset

Create a dataset from a Japanese text corpus using a tokenizer hosted on Hugging Face Hub.

Before you start

  • A Japanese corpus text file
  • Python environment for the repository scripts
  • A Hugging Face Hub tokenizer identifier

Steps

  1. Choose the input corpus name, maximum sequence length and masking style.

  2. Run the documented create_datasets.py workflow with the corpus file and tokenizer identifier.

  3. Set --load_from_hub to use the Hugging Face Hub tokenizer.

Expected outcome

A dataset directory for use in the repository’s pretraining workflow; the README gives nsp_128_wiki-ja as an example output naming pattern.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents dataset creation, not model training results or downstream task performance.
  • The example tokenizer and options are repository examples, not universal settings.
