Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a documented starting point for running PDF-based question answering with Qdrant storage and an Ollama model.

Who it is for

  • Developers exploring retrieval-augmented generation with PDF collections
  • Users who want to run a local or Docker-based document question-answering prototype

Documented uses

  • Index and embed PDFs in a vector database
  • Choose an Ollama-served model for inference
  • Generate responses using indexed PDF material
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The documented workflow uses Python, a requirements file, and edits to the model choice in the script.
  • Qdrant handles vector storage, while Ollama serves the selected model.
  • The README allows included test PDFs or users’ own documents and describes Conda, env, or Docker environments.
  • The repository declares an Apache-2.0 license.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up and run the PDF RAG script

Configure the documented local workflow to index PDFs and generate responses with a selected Ollama model.

Before you start

  • A local project path and data subfolder
  • Conda, env, or Docker for a virtual environment
  • Ollama and a selected model
  • The repository’s requirements file and Python script

Steps

  1. Create a local path and data subfolder; use the included test PDFs or substitute your own documents.

  2. Create a virtual environment with Conda, env, or Docker, then install dependencies with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install -r /path/to/requirements.txt
  3. Start Ollama with ollama run mistral or another chosen model; for Ollama for Windows, ensure it is active if it runs in the background.

  4. Edit the model choice at lines 42 and 43 of llama_index_RAG.py, save the file, and run the script.

Expected outcome

The script indexes and embeds PDFs in a vector database and produces model-generated responses; the README says to expect results similar to its example.

Guide limitations

  • The instructions require editing the model choice in the Python script.
  • The README describes a script workflow and example results, not a packaged interface.
