Practical overview
When it fits
Use the repository as a code reference when studying or adapting the documented Ethereum derivation sequence.
Who it is for
- Java developers examining Ethereum mnemonic and key derivation.
- Readers looking for an example of a BIP32 and BIP44-based Ethereum derivation workflow.
Documented uses
- Follow the documented stages from entropy to mnemonic.
- Understand how the mnemonic is used to derive a seed and Ethereum child key.
- Review how an Ethereum address is obtained from the derived key pair.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies an MIT license.
- The README gives an Ethereum derivation workflow, while Bitcoin functionality is identified only in the repository description.
- The README names Java, PBKDF2, BIP32, and a BIP44 Ethereum address index in its process.
- The supplied documentation does not give setup or complete execution instructions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Derive an Ethereum address from a mnemonic
Follow the README’s documented sequence from a mnemonic to an Ethereum child key pair and address.
Before you start
- A mnemonic phrase.
- The project’s referenced PBKDF2 seed-generation function and BIP32 library APIs.
- The README’s referenced helper functions and data, including getSeed, EthAddress, and the wordlist where applicable.
Steps
Generate a 512-bit seed from the mnemonic with PBKDF2, using the salt string "mnemonic" as shown.
Create the root extended private key from the seed using ExtendedPrivateKey.fromSeed and Bitcoin.MAIN_NET.
Set the Ethereum address index with BIP44.m().purpose44().coinType(60).account(0).external().address(0), identified as 44.60.0.0.0.
Derive the child private key with AddressIndex.DERIVATION, create an ECKeyPair from its key bytes, and pass the child key and key pair to EthAddress.
Expected outcome
The documented sequence obtains a child key pair and Ethereum address from a mnemonic.
Guide limitations
- The README describes Ethereum derivation; it does not document Bitcoin address generation.
