Open Dev Data

Open Dev Data is a taxonomy and dataset connecting open-source blockchain, Web3, cryptocurrency and decentralized ecosystems with related code repositories. Its viewer supports ecosystem and repository queries and exports, while its Python CLI provides JSON Lines exports, Parquet downloads, DuckDB imports and an interactive SQL interface.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the web viewer for queries and targeted ecosystem exports; use the CLI when you need JSON Lines exports, dated taxonomy snapshots or local analysis with Parquet and DuckDB.

Who it is for

  • Developers researching repositories associated with a blockchain ecosystem.
  • Data analysts who want to export or query ecosystem and repository listings.
  • Teams building ecosystem directories or repository discovery tools from taxonomy data.

Documented uses

  • Find repositories associated with an ecosystem or sub-ecosystem.
  • Export repository listings for a selected ecosystem.
  • Generate taxonomy exports, including a state for a specified date.
  • Download and explore taxonomy data locally using SQL.

Requirements & limits

  • The viewer supports querying ecosystems and repositories and exporting repositories for specific ecosystems.
  • CLI exports are JSON Lines and can target one ecosystem or a taxonomy state at a specified date.
  • The CLI supports downloading Parquet data and importing it into DuckDB; the documentation advises reserving about 100 GB for the full Parquet-and-DuckDB workflow.
  • Code is licensed under MIT; taxonomy data and documentation are licensed under CC BY 4.0, which requires attribution for data use.
  • The project describes the taxonomy as incomplete and subject to ongoing additions.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Export repositories for one ecosystem

Create a JSON Lines export containing repository entries for a selected ecosystem.

Before you start

  • The Open Dev Data CLI, run with uvx or installed using uv.

Steps

  1. Run uvx open-dev-data --help to invoke the CLI, or install it with the command below.

    Documented command
    uv tool install open-dev-data
  2. Run open-dev-data export -e Bitcoin bitcoin.jsonl, replacing the ecosystem and output filename as needed.

Expected outcome

A JSON Lines file containing repository entries for the selected ecosystem, with ecosystem, branch, repository URL and tag fields illustrated in the documentation.

Guide limitations

  • The taxonomy is not complete and may change as ecosystems and repositories are added.
