Practical overview
When it fits
Use ExtremeBERT when you need a configurable, repository-based workflow for BERT pretraining or downstream fine-tuning and can provide the required Linux GPU and disk resources.
Who it is for
- Researchers training BERT on custom text corpora
- Practitioners adapting saved BERT checkpoints to downstream tasks
- Researchers comparing custom optimizers or learning-rate schedulers during language-model pretraining
Documented uses
- Prepare a dataset and configure a staged BERT training pipeline.
- Pretrain BERT on a custom dataset or a dataset available through Hugging Face’s dataset hub.
- Set a time-based pretraining limit or enable mixed-precision training.
- Fine-tune a saved checkpoint on a GLUE task such as MRPC.
- Integrate a customized optimizer or scheduler into the pretraining pipeline.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The documented system requirements include Ubuntu 18.04 or later, at least 20 GB of GPU memory and at least 200 GB of disk space.
- BERT is listed as supported; RoBERTa, ALBERT and DeBERTa are listed as in development.
- The staged pipeline is configured through YAML, including dataset and GPU settings.
- The repository documents Hugging Face dataset hub datasets and custom datasets, plus preprocessing scripts for Wikipedia and BookCorpus.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure and run the staged BERT pipeline
Run the repository’s configured pipeline through environment setup, dataset preparation, pretraining, fine-tuning and test-result collection.
Before you start
- Linux Ubuntu 18.04 or later
- At least 20 GB of GPU memory
- At least 200 GB of disk space
- A dataset and GPU configuration set in a YAML file based on configs/bert-simple.yaml
Steps
Review configs/bert-simple.yaml and adjust the dataset and available-GPU settings.
Run
source install.sh; python main.py --config configs/bert-simple.yamlfrom the repository.
Expected outcome
The documented pipeline runs its stages in sequence and generates a ZIP file for GLUE test-server submission under output_test_translated/finetune/*/*.zip.
Guide limitations
- The documented output is a GLUE submission ZIP, not a general deployment artifact.
- The repository directs users to PIPELINE_CONFIG.md for further YAML configuration details.
Fine-tune a saved checkpoint on a GLUE task
Use the documented run_glue.py workflow to fine-tune and evaluate a saved model on MRPC.
Before you start
- A saved model checkpoint
- A configured Linux environment with the repository dependencies installed
Steps
Set
--model_name_or_pathto the saved checkpoint and--task_name MRPC.Set output, sequence-length, batch-size, learning-rate and evaluation options for the run.
Run the command below with the selected options, including
--do_trainand--do_eval.python run_glue.py
Expected outcome
The documented example trains and evaluates the checkpoint on MRPC, writing results to the selected output directory.
Guide limitations
- The repository provides an example configuration; users must supply their checkpoint and choose appropriate run settings.
