Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when experimenting with GAN training that can benefit from signals drawn from one or more pretrained vision models, or when reproducing the project's StyleGAN2 research workflow.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying image-generation GAN training.
- Developers adapting discriminator losses in custom GAN training loops.
Documented uses
- Train StyleGAN2 models with pretrained vision-model guidance.
- Add a vision-aided discriminator loss to a custom GAN.
- Compare candidate pretrained models by their separation of real and generated samples.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under MIT.
- The documented approach selects models using linear separability of real and fake samples in pretrained embeddings, then progressively adds selected models to the discriminator ensemble.
- Documented vision-model options include CLIP, DINO, Swin, VGG, and detection, segmentation, and face models.
- Multiple models can be specified together; multi-level convolutional outputs are documented for CLIP and DINO.
- The custom-GAN example uses CUDA and recommends adding the vision-aided adversarial loss after standard-loss warm-up.
- The repository describes StyleGAN2 training code as reproducing its paper results and also references BigGAN and StyleGAN3 training.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add the vision-aided discriminator to a custom GAN
Integrate the documented vision-aided discriminator loss into an existing GAN training loop.
Before you start
- A custom GAN with generator G and latent input z.
- Real-image and generated-image sampling functions.
- Python environment able to install the project package; the README's example sets device to cuda.
- A selected off-the-shelf vision model and supported output configuration.
Steps
Install the library using the documented package name vision-aided-loss or the repository Git URL.
Create vision_aided_loss.Discriminator with a chosen cv_type, loss_type, and device; the example freezes the ensemble feature extractor.
Compute discriminator loss for real and generated images, then compute the generator loss using the discriminator's for_G path.
Add the vision-aided adversarial loss after training with the standard loss for a number of warmup iterations.
Expected outcome
The custom GAN training loop incorporates the vision-aided discriminator and its losses for discriminator and generator updates.
Guide limitations
- The README's example uses CUDA; it does not establish compatibility across other platforms.
- The warmup duration and model configuration are left to the practitioner.
