Practical overview
When it fits
Consider it when integrating Bitcoin payment records and status handling into a Rails application, after assessing the project’s explicitly stated unmaintained status and its reliance on external blockchain APIs.
Who it is for
- Rails developers adding Bitcoin payment tracking to model-backed application workflows.
- Teams that need distinct payment addresses and states for pending, partial, paid, confirmed or comped payments.
Documented uses
- Associate Bitcoin payment records with Rails models.
- Generate unique Bitcoin payment addresses using a BIP32 seed and extended master public key.
- Track incoming payments and react to payment-status changes.
- Calculate Bitcoin amounts from local-currency prices and retain transaction and conversion details.
Requirements & limits
- The README says the project is no longer maintained.
- Address generation requires a BIP32 extended master public key and derivation path.
- Payment checks use an external API adapter; the README names Blocktrail, Blockchain.info and BlockCypher.
- Webhooks are documented only for the Blocktrail adapter and require webhook credentials and API keys.
- The README documents separate rake tasks for price updates and payment processing, with a warning not to run the payment processor when webhooks are configured.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
