Practical overview

When it fits

Use Overture when a coding task has multiple steps or decision points and you want a visual review and approval stage before the agent begins implementation.

Who it is for

  • Developers who use MCP-compatible AI coding agents and want to inspect proposed work before implementation.
  • Teams or individuals who want a visual view of plan branches, requirements and execution progress.

Documented uses

  • Inspect a coding agent’s planned steps and branches before code is written.
  • Add files, instructions or other required context to plan steps.
  • Approve a plan and follow node-by-node execution progress.
  • Pause or resume execution, rerun a node, or restart from a selected node.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

Open-source software under the MIT license. The documented setup runs the MCP server locally and opens its web interface at `http://localhost:3031` by default.

  • Requires an MCP-compatible AI coding agent; the README gives setup examples for Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, GitHub Copilot and Sixth AI.
  • The interface uses HTTP port 3031 and WebSocket port 3030 by default; environment variables can change these settings.
  • The plan review can include per-step context, branch choices and required fields, which must be completed before approval.
  • The coding agent performs the work; Overture provides the visual planning, approval and progress interface.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Connect Overture to Claude Code

Add Overture as an MCP server in Claude Code so its local interface can display a coding plan.

Before you start

  • Claude Code
  • The npx command, as used in the documented configuration

Steps

  1. Run claude mcp add overture-mcp -- npx overture-mcp.

  2. Give the coding agent a task; the README says Overture opens at http://localhost:3031 with the plan ready for approval.

  3. Review the graph and complete any required fields or branch choices before approving execution.

Expected outcome

Overture is configured as an MCP server for Claude Code, and the documented workflow presents plans in a local interface for review before execution.

Guide limitations

  • The source documents this setup path but does not establish compatibility with every coding agent or configuration.
  • The steps describe the documented setup and workflow; they are not execution-test results.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for AI coding assistance

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
