Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have an Ollama server and want a Java-based browser interface for interacting with its models.
Who it is for
- Ollama users who want a browser-based way to interact with server-hosted models.
- Java and Spring developers looking for an Ollama web UI built with familiar technologies.
Documented uses
- Chat with models running on an Ollama server through a web interface.
- Configure and launch the UI against an Ollama service using Docker, Docker Compose or a standalone JAR.
Requirements & limits
- The README requires Java 17 or later.
- The application connects to an Ollama server; it is not presented as the model-hosting service.
- The repository states that active maintenance has ended and the project migrated to Doota.
- The repository specifies the MIT license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run the UI alongside Ollama with Docker Compose
Configure the documented Docker Compose services for Ollama and Ollama4J Web UI, then start them.
Before you start
- Docker Compose
- A docker-compose.yaml file
- The documented Ollama and Ollama4J Web UI container images
Steps
Create a docker-compose.yaml containing the Ollama service and the ollama4j-web-ui service.
Configure the UI service with OLLAMA_HOST_ADDR set to http://ollama:11434 and publish port 9090 to container port 8080.
Start the services with docker-compose -f /path/to/your/docker-compose.yaml up.
Open http://localhost:9090 in a browser.
Expected outcome
The documented setup makes the web UI available at http://localhost:9090 and connects it to the Ollama service in the Compose configuration.
Guide limitations
- The repository says the project is no longer actively maintained and has migrated to Doota.
