Bert Relation Extraction

Bert Relation Extraction is a public Python and PyTorch implementation of BERT-family relation-extraction models based on the ACL 2019 “Matching the Blanks” paper, with additional ALBERT and BioBERT variants. It supports pre-training, dataset fine-tuning and sentence-level relation inference.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you need research code for training or applying BERT-family relation-extraction models, and can supply the required Python environment, model resources and task data.

Who it is for

  • NLP researchers studying relation extraction and distributional similarity
  • Developers seeking an implementation to adapt as a relation-extraction component
  • Practitioners comparing documented BERT, ALBERT and BioBERT variants

Documented uses

  • Pre-train relation-learning models from continuous text using entity pairs
  • Fine-tune models on SemEval2010 Task 8 or FewRel 1.0
  • Predict a relation between two marked entities in a sentence
  • Explore automatic entity detection and relation predictions for candidate pairs

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.

  • This is an independent implementation based on the paper, not its official repository.
  • The documented environment requires Python 3.8 or later, repository dependencies and spaCy's en_core_web_lg model.
  • BioBERT use requires separately downloading its model into additional_models; BERT-family pre-trained models are attributed to Hugging Face.
  • Pre-training can take a long time depending on available GPU; the README says direct fine-tuning is also possible.
  • The repository documents SemEval2010 Task 8 and FewRel 1.0 workflows, each requiring its dataset.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run sentence-level relation inference

Use the documented inference interface to predict a relation for a sentence with two marked entities.

Before you start

  • Python 3.8 or later
  • Install the repository requirements and spaCy's en_core_web_lg model
  • A trained model and the repository's inference arguments
  • A sentence with the entities of interest marked as [E1] and [E2]

Steps

  1. Prepare the project environment using the README's listed Python and spaCy requirements.

  2. Initialize the documented inference helper, infer_from_trained, with detect_entities=False.

  3. Pass a sentence containing [E1] and [E2] entity tags to infer_sentence.

Expected outcome

The example returns a relation label such as Cause-Effect(e1,e2).

Guide limitations

  • The inference helper uses a trained model; the README does not provide model weights as part of this recipe.
  • The example assumes the two entities are tagged manually; automatic entity detection is a separate documented mode.

Prepare the repository environment

Install the documented Python dependencies and spaCy language model before using the implementation.

Before you start

  • Python 3.8 or later
  • A local checkout of the public repository

Steps

  1. Install the packages listed in requirements.txt with pip.

  2. Download spaCy's en_core_web_lg model.

Expected outcome

The README's listed software prerequisites are installed for subsequent model workflows.

Guide limitations

  • This setup does not train a model or establish that a particular machine can run a training workload.
