Practical overview
When it fits
Use Chars2Vec when a text-processing task needs word representations derived from spelling and character sequences, especially where words may include typos, abbreviations, slang or specialized vocabulary.
Who it is for
- Python developers adding word embeddings to text-processing pipelines
- Teams working with text that includes misspellings, abbreviations or slang
- Developers adapting word similarity representations to a specialized vocabulary
Documented uses
- Convert a list of words into fixed-length vector representations.
- Represent similarly written words with nearby vectors for similarity-oriented text processing.
- Train and save a model using labeled word pairs and a project-specific character set.
Requirements & limits
The public repository specifies an Apache-2.0 license. Its README documents installation through pip or from source.
- The documented pretrained models are English models.
- Model dimensions are available in five listed sizes, from 50 to 300.
- For custom training, the character list determines which characters the model considers; characters outside it are ignored.
- The repository documents Python 2.7 and Python 3.0+.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Load a pretrained English model and vectorize words
Create fixed-length vectors for a list of words with a pretrained Chars2Vec model.
Before you start
- Python 2.7 or Python 3.0+
- Install the chars2vec library with pip or from the project source
- A list of words to vectorize
Steps
Install the library with the command below, or build and install it from the downloaded source using the command below.
pip install chars2vecpython setup.py installImport
chars2vecand load a pretrained model such aseng_50withchars2vec.load_model('eng_50').Pass a list of words to
vectorize_words(words)on the loaded model.
Expected outcome
A NumPy array containing one embedding vector per input word; the selected model determines the vector dimension.
Guide limitations
- The listed pretrained models are for English and have dimensions 50, 100, 150, 200 or 300.
- The model generates vectors from character sequences; it does not keep a dictionary of word embeddings.
Train and save a model for a custom character set
Train a Chars2Vec model from labeled similar and dissimilar word pairs, then save it for later loading.
Before you start
- The chars2vec Python library
- A chosen embedding dimension
- Word-pair training data with proximity labels: similar pairs labeled 0 and dissimilar pairs labeled 1
- A character list covering the text the model should process
Steps
Prepare
X_trainas word pairs andy_trainas their proximity labels.Define
model_charsas the character list for the model.Call
chars2vec.train_model(emb_dim, X_train, y_train, model_chars)to create and train the model.Save the resulting model with
chars2vec.save_model(model, path_to_model); load it later withchars2vec.load_model(path_to_model).
Expected outcome
A trained Chars2Vec model saved to a directory and available to load for vectorization.
Guide limitations
- Characters absent from
model_charsare ignored. - The documentation describes training inputs and saving or loading the model, but does not specify training-data size or model-quality thresholds.
