Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have a reachable Ethereum client and want to analyze blockchain data through Presto SQL rather than access it directly through a JavaScript API.
Who it is for
- Analysts who want to query Ethereum blockchain data with SQL through Presto.
- Teams operating Presto that want to include Ethereum data in a SQL reporting workflow.
Documented uses
- Calculate block-time intervals and averages over selected block ranges.
- Group blocks by miner to examine activity over a specified range.
- Aggregate ERC-20 token movement by token within a block interval.
- Inspect the connector's available tables and documented columns.
Requirements & limits
- The connector requires a reachable Ethereum client; the README describes local Geth or Parity and hosted Infura options.
- Presto and its CLI must be installed, and the connector must be built with Maven and loaded into the server's plugin directory.
- Block-number filters are the documented way to constrain scans; the README warns that unbounded queries can be very slow.
- The repository specifies the Apache-2.0 license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Ethereum connector in Presto
Build and configure the connector so a Presto server can connect to an Ethereum client.
Before you start
- Presto and Presto CLI installed
- Java and Maven available to build the plugin
- A reachable Ethereum client: local Geth or Parity, or hosted Infura
Steps
Clone the repository and run
mvn clean package; the built plugin is placed in thetargetfolder.Create
etc/catalog/ethereum.propertiesand configureconnector.name=ethereumplus an Ethereum connection option: HTTP JSON-RPC, IPC, or Infura.Copy and extract the built plugin archive into Presto's
plugin/ethereumdirectory.Start the Presto server and connect with Presto CLI using the
ethereumcatalog anddefaultschema.
Expected outcome
A configured Presto catalog for issuing SQL queries against Ethereum data through the connector.
Guide limitations
- Block number is the only predicate documented as pushable to narrow the data scan; queries without block ranges can retrieve blocks from the beginning and take a very long time.
