Generator

Generator is an open-source Solana project combining an API, serverless rendering functions and smart contracts to create dynamic NFT metadata and images within the Metaplex NFT standard. Its API lets metadata reference on-chain data, and its on-chain mapping implementation supports more complex updates.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Consider Generator when a Solana NFT collection needs Metaplex-compatible metadata that incorporates changing on-chain account data, rather than relying only on fixed trait values.

Who it is for

  • Solana NFT developers building collections with attributes linked to program-account data.
  • Teams creating generative NFTs whose metadata should reflect current on-chain values.

Documented uses

  • Add account-derived values to NFT metadata attributes.
  • Refresh dynamic attributes when NFT metadata is viewed or loaded.
  • Map program-account data into NFT traits using account names and an IDL.

Requirements & limits

The public repository specifies an AGPL-3.0 license.

  • The documented integration targets Solana and the Metaplex NFT standard.
  • Metadata can include a base URI and attribute groups, with optional scopes that query and deserialize program accounts using the owning program’s IDL.
  • The project describes serverless rendering and says the program address is the same on devnet, testnet and mainnet-beta.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure dynamic NFT attributes from on-chain account data

Specify base metadata and attribute fields that Generator can resolve from on-chain accounts.

Before you start

  • An existing base metadata URI.
  • An account address and account name for any scoped fields; the account is deserialized using the owning program's IDL.

Steps

  1. Provide the existing base metadata in the uri field.

  2. Set attrs to attribute groups separated by semicolons.

  3. For account-derived attributes, prefix a field group with {address}.{accountName}. to scope it to an on-chain account.

  4. Format each field group as key:value:display_type, using the documented optional-field fallback behavior.

Expected outcome

When the NFT metadata is viewed or loaded, Generator can return attributes incorporating fresh on-chain data; unscoped values are treated as strings.

Guide limitations

  • The documented format relies on account names and the IDL for the owning program to deserialize scoped account data.
  • The source describes the attribute parameter format but does not provide a complete request URL or execution procedure.
