Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Hive when a task benefits from parallel agent roles and a visible coordination layer instead of separate terminal sessions.

Who it is for

  • Developers who already run supported CLI agents and want to coordinate their work in one workspace.
  • Users who want to split implementation, review, testing or research across agent processes.

Documented uses

  • Delegate a coding change to one worker and have another review its edge cases.
  • Divide a bug investigation across separate code paths or recent commit history.
  • Coordinate research, drafting and fact-checking while keeping tasks and reports together.

Requirements & limits

The real-agent workflow runs locally and requires Node.js plus at least one supported, authenticated CLI agent available on PATH. The first-run demo does not require an installed CLI, network access or sign-in.

  • Hive orchestrates existing CLI processes rather than replacing them.
  • Agents run as real PTY processes and share a task graph at .hive/tasks.md.
  • The project documents macOS and Linux support; Windows is best-effort.
  • The optional PWA works only while the Hive daemon is running and its install prompt is documented for Chrome, Edge and Brave.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Hive and open its local workbench

Start the local Hive interface using the documented npm installation.

Before you start

  • Node.js 22.18+ in the 22.x line, or Node.js 24+.
  • At least one supported agent CLI installed, authenticated and available on PATH.
  • Keep npm optional dependencies enabled for the platform-specific PTY binary.

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @tt-a1i/hive
  2. Run hive.

  3. Open the local URL printed by Hive, usually http://127.0.0.1:9483/.

Expected outcome

The Hive browser workbench is available on the local machine for coordinating installed CLI agents.

Guide limitations

  • The documented supported platforms are macOS and Linux; Windows support is best-effort.
  • The demo can be viewed without an installed CLI, but real agent processes require the CLI prerequisites.
COMPARE OPTIONS

Compare options for Agent orchestration

These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
