Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a code-level BigGAN training workflow and can provide the required Python packages, image data and GPU compute. It also provides scripts for sampling from trained models and continuing training from checkpoints.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying generative adversarial networks and image synthesis.
- Developers adapting BigGAN training code or experimenting with dataset and training configurations.
Documented uses
- Train a BigGAN model for natural-image synthesis using multi-GPU scripts and gradient accumulation.
- Prepare image datasets and Inception moments used for FID evaluation.
- Generate samples and interpolations from a trained model.
- Resume or fine-tune a model and adapt dataset metadata for a custom dataset.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identified as MIT-licensed.
- The documented dependencies include PyTorch 1.0.1, tqdm, NumPy, SciPy and h5py.
- The main training scripts target four to eight GPUs; the example full-sized configuration uses eight V100 GPUs and an effective batch size of 2,048.
- The optional in-memory loading mode loads an approximately 64 GB HDF5 file into RAM; the README suggests roughly 96 GB or more RAM for that mode.
- The repository's PyTorch Inception scores are described as monitoring metrics and differ from scores using the official TensorFlow Inception implementation.
- BigGAN-deep scripts are included but described by the README as not fully trained and untested.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare the default ImageNet training data
Prepare the repository's ImageNet data workflow and cached 128×128 HDF5 dataset, with Inception moments for FID.
Before you start
- PyTorch 1.0.1
- tqdm, NumPy, SciPy and h5py
- ImageNet training set downloaded into the repository's data directory by default
Steps
Place the ImageNet training set in the default data directory, or modify the preparation settings for the dataset location.
Optionally edit scripts/utils/prepare_data.sh to adjust dataset preparation.
Run the documented preparation script to prepare the optional HDF5 cache and Inception moments.
Expected outcome
A prepared dataset workflow, including an optional cached HDF5 copy at 128×128 under the default settings, and Inception moments for FID.
Guide limitations
- The HDF5 cache is optional.
- The default preparation settings assume ImageNet is in the repository's data directory.
- The guide covers data preparation, not model training.
Resume or fine-tune a BigGAN checkpoint
Use the documented training-script option to resume interrupted training or fine-tune a pretrained model.
Before you start
- A pretrained checkpoint or an interrupted training run
- A suitable BigGAN launch script and configured training environment
Steps
Choose the BigGAN launch script for the intended training configuration.
Add the documented --resume argument to the script invocation.
Optionally set --experiment_name to identify a run with modified optimizer settings.
Expected outcome
The training script is configured to resume a run or fine-tune a pretrained model.
Guide limitations
- The README does not specify checkpoint download or placement steps in this guidance.
- This guide does not establish that a run has been executed successfully.
