Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when AI conversations need to draw on uploaded personal or shared documents, particularly where the deployment is built around Azure services and Entra access controls.
Who it is for
- Individuals who want AI conversations grounded in their own uploaded documents
- Teams that need shared document workspaces for knowledge discovery and question answering
- Azure operators configuring a document-chat application with Entra authentication and role-based access
Documented uses
- Ask questions using information in uploaded personal documents
- Collaborate around shared documents in group workspaces
- Classify documents and reuse prompts through optional configured features
- Retrieve relevant passages using semantic and keyword search
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public GitHub repository. The documented deployment route requires an Azure subscription and specified Azure and Entra permissions.
- Core document retrieval combines Azure AI Document Intelligence processing, Azure OpenAI embeddings and Azure AI Search hybrid retrieval.
- Group workspaces support shared use; Entra ID authentication and App Roles provide the documented access-control model.
- Features such as video and audio processing, image generation, classification and enhanced citations are optional and depend on administrative configuration.
- The quick-start deployment prerequisites include Azure CLI, Azure Developer CLI, Python 3.12, PowerShell 7 and Visual Studio Code.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare Entra application registration for deployment
Create the Entra application registration and save its values to an Azure Developer CLI environment for the deployment flow.
Before you start
- A local checkout of the repository
- PowerShell 7; Linux and macOS users can run the script with pwsh
- Permission to create an application registration in the Entra tenant
- Azure Developer CLI environment if saving registration values to it
Steps
In PowerShell, move to the deployers directory and set appName and environment variables.
Run Initialize-EntraApplication.ps1 with the app name, environment and app-registration roles JSON path.
Use -AzdEnvironmentName to target a named AZD environment, or -SkipAzdEnvironmentUpdate for a standalone/manual workflow.
If the script cannot update the AZD environment, save the displayed values and set them later with azd env set.
Expected outcome
An Entra enterprise application and app registration are created, with the values needed by azd up saved to the resolved AZD environment by default.
Guide limitations
- This prepares application registration; it does not cover the full application deployment.
- The registration step requires tenant permission or help from an Entra administrator.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
