Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an application needs a local interface to IPFS-backed files and Textile bucket operations, with options for sharing and native file-system access.
Who it is for
- Developers building decentralized desktop applications that need local file and bucket operations.
- Developers connecting an application to a user's locally running daemon through gRPC or the documented JavaScript client.
Documented uses
- Create and list files and directories through a local daemon.
- Create private encrypted buckets and share buckets or files.
- Mount files for native browsing through FUSE.
- Support sharing by username or email using the identity service, or share using public keys.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents binary downloads through its releases and says the default setup connects to hosted services. It is licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The daemon can use an embedded IPFS node or be configured to connect to an external node.
- Textile Hub is described as required for file sharing and backups; hosted services are the default, while custom service endpoints can be configured.
- Username-based sharing relies on optional identity services; public-key sharing is also documented.
- The gRPC API may change while the project remains in active development.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Run Space Daemon from source
Start the daemon from a cloned repository using the documented development command.
Before you start
- A cloned Space Daemon repository.
- Go and the environment variables listed in the README, including IPFS_ADDR, SERVICES_API_URL, VAULT_API_URL, VAULT_SALT_SECRET, SERVICES_HUB_AUTH_URL, TXL_HUB_TARGET, TXL_HUB_MA, TXL_THREADS_TARGET, TXL_USER_KEY, and TXL_USER_SECRET.
Steps
Export the required environment variables, providing values for the relevant IPFS, Space Services, vault, and Textile Hub settings.
From the cloned repository, run the command below.
go run ./cmd/space-daemon -dev
Expected outcome
The documented command starts Space Daemon from source in development mode, provided the required environment variables are set.
Guide limitations
- The README marks TXL_USER_KEY and TXL_USER_SECRET as temporarily required.
- The project is in active development and its API may change before it reaches a stable version.
