Practical overview
When it fits
Use Wigolo when an AI agent needs web search or page-gathering tools in a local-first setup, or when a self-hosted agent or application needs the project’s MCP, REST or SDK integration options.
Who it is for
- Developers configuring web retrieval for MCP-compatible coding assistants.
- Teams connecting self-hosted agents or applications to web search and page-fetching tools.
- Agent-framework users who need web material gathered for research tasks.
Documented uses
- Search the web and fetch pages for an agent’s research task.
- Crawl and extract web content for retrieval.
- Connect an agent or application to web-intelligence functions through MCP, REST or an SDK.
Requirements & limits
The quickstart lists macOS, Linux and Windows, and requires Node.js 20 or later with about 1.5 GB of free disk space. The repository labels the project public beta.
- The local engine setup downloads a browser engine and on-device models.
- Core search, fetch, crawl, extract, cache and find-similar tools are described as keyless.
- Synthesized answers for research, agent and answer-formatted search require an LLM provider; without one, the tools return a raw brief and evidence.
- The README lists MCP and plain REST, plus SDK examples, but the overview does not establish endpoint details or a particular client integration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Wigolo and configure a supported MCP agent
Install the local engine and wire one or more named coding agents into its MCP configuration.
Before you start
- Node.js 20 or later
- About 1.5 GB of free disk space
- macOS, Linux or Windows
Steps
Run the command below to set up the local engine, or use the command below with comma-separated supported agent names.
npx wigolo initnpx wigolo init --agents=claude-code,cursorAllow setup to download the browser engine and on-device models and report component health.
Run the command below to check the installation's health.
npx wigolo doctor
Expected outcome
The local engine is set up; when agent names are supplied, Wigolo writes their MCP configuration and, where supported, instructions.
Guide limitations
- The guide describes setup and health reporting, not a verified result from a particular agent integration.
- Research, agent and answer-formatted search use an LLM provider for synthesized answers; without one they return a raw brief and evidence.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wigolo | Search the web and fetch pages for an agent’s research task. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The quickstart lists macOS, Linux and Windows, and requires Node.js 20 or later with about 1.5 GB of free disk space. The repository labels the project public beta. |
| Overture | Inspect a coding agent’s planned steps and branches before code is written. | Self-hosted, Server, Web | Open-source software under the MIT license. The documented setup runs the MCP server locally and opens its web interface at `http://localhost:3031` by default. |
| WEB3 Docs | Find a proposal by identifier, topic, fork name or opcode, with an optional chain filter. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented local setup requires Python 3.11 or later, uv, about 500 MB of free disk space and Git on PATH for synchronization. |
