Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a search task needs source and attribution details, when transcript passages must be located by timestamp, or when a developer needs a structured corpus and documented reference workflow for a retrieval product.
Who it is for
- Readers and researchers locating attributed passages across published material and transcripts.
- Developers building source-grounded retrieval, citation or agent workflows on top of a structured corpus.
- Maintainers organizing source metadata, transcript records and release versions.
Documented uses
- Search original texts or AI-derived notes as separate layers.
- Find passages by content type, including books, videos and excerpts.
- Locate transcript material with speaker and timestamp context.
- Use structured people, program and source records to discover related material.
- Build a product that presents citations, synthesis and inference against source material.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies its programs and documentation as MIT-licensed. Corpus items have differing reuse terms; consult the item’s applicable license.
- Python utilities and a documented local search workflow are provided.
- Search supports separate raw and derived layers, with documented content-type filters.
- Results retain source and attribution information; video matches can include timestamps.
- Corpus licensing is mixed, so code licensing does not imply that all included text is freely reusable.
- Agent integration is supported by architecture and answering-protocol guidance, rather than a universal product integration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Search the local corpus by query and material type
Retrieve source-linked passages from the corpus using the included Python search script.
Before you start
- Python 3
- A local copy of the repository and corpus
Steps
Run the command below with a search phrase and
--layer raw --jsonto search original material.python3 scripts/search.pyUse
--layer derived --jsonto search AI-organized notes instead.
Expected outcome
Search results include text snippets and source, date and attribution details; video matches can be located by timestamp.
Guide limitations
- The raw and derived layers are separate search targets.
- Each corpus item has its own reuse terms; check the applicable license before reuse.
