Practical overview
When it fits
Use Picogpt for educational exploration or small, single-prompt GPT-2 generation experiments when a minimal NumPy implementation and greedy decoding are suitable.
Who it is for
- Readers learning how a GPT-2 forward pass works.
- Developers exploring a small GPT-2 inference implementation.
- People running single-prompt text-generation experiments from the command line.
Documented uses
- Generate text from a prompt using GPT-2.
- Set generation length and choose among documented model sizes.
- Inspect a compact implementation of the GPT-2 forward pass.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under MIT.
- The documented implementation is slow.
- Generation is single-prompt and greedy; there is no training code or batch inference.
- The README documents model sizes of 124M, 355M, 774M, and 1558M.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install dependencies and generate text from a prompt
Set up the documented Python dependencies and use the command-line script to generate text.
Before you start
- Python; the README names Python 3.9.10 as its tested version.
- The repository and its requirements.txt file.
Steps
Install the listed dependencies with the command below.
pip install -r requirements.txtRun the command below to generate text.
python gpt2.py "Your prompt here"Optionally provide
--n_tokens_to_generate,--model_size(124M, 355M, 774M, or 1558M), and--models_dir.
Expected outcome
The script generates text from one prompt, with optional controls for generation length, model size, and model directory.
Guide limitations
- The README describes the implementation as slow.
- It supports one prompt at a time and greedy decoding; it does not include training, batch inference, or top-k, top-p, and temperature sampling.
