Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a command-line, Anchor-based workflow for developing Solana programs, particularly when following the documented project setup and localnet deployment sequence.

Who it is for

  • Solana developers working with Anchor and Rust programs.
  • Developers who want a repository-guided localnet build and deployment workflow.
  • JavaScript or TypeScript developers writing unit tests for Solana programs.

Documented uses

  • Scaffold an Anchor project and author a Solana program in Rust.
  • Compile a program and obtain its program address.
  • Set the program ID in the Anchor configuration and source.
  • Run a local validator and deploy a program to localnet.
  • Use JavaScript or TypeScript tooling for unit tests.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and specifies an MIT license.

  • The documented workflow uses local command-line tools rather than a hosted editor.
  • The README lists Node.js tools for JavaScript or TypeScript unit tests.
  • Installation instructions focus on macOS M1 and Lima VM on macOS M1, with platform-specific Solana and validator caveats.
  • The README identifies Mainnet, Testnet and Devnet, while the detailed deployment walkthrough is for localnet.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Create, build and deploy an Anchor program to localnet

Follow the repository’s documented sequence from an Anchor project scaffold to localnet deployment.

Before you start

  • Rust, the Solana CLI and Anchor CLI installed; the README recommends AVM for managing Anchor CLI versions.
  • A Solana keypair and sufficient SOL/lamports for the deployer account; the README notes localnet does not require funding.
  • A running solana-test-validator and Solana CLI configured for localnet.

Steps

  1. Create a project with anchor init hello-solana and write the program in src/lib.rs.

  2. Build with anchor build, obtain the program address using solana address -k , then set that address in Anchor.toml and the declare_id!() macro.

  3. Check the deployer balance with solana balance; for localnet, the README says funding is not needed.

  4. Run solana-test-validator in another terminal, confirm the CLI is connected to localnet, and deploy with anchor deploy.

Expected outcome

An Anchor program built and deployed to the local validator, with its program address set in the project configuration and source.

Guide limitations

  • The detailed deployment steps cover localnet; the README names Mainnet, Testnet and Devnet as target chains but does not give equivalent deployment walkthroughs.
  • The installation notes report a solana-test-validator issue on macOS M1 and an unsuccessful Solana installation in a Lima VM.
