Indy

Indy is a Python command-line Bitcoin recovery and sweeping tool. It scans mnemonics, xprivs and xpubs against known derivation paths and address types using Electrum servers, then finds associated UTXOs. It can construct and, when explicitly requested, broadcast a transaction sweeping funds to a chosen address.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Indy when you have a Bitcoin mnemonic or extended key and need to search known wallet derivation paths for associated UTXOs. For a transfer, it can prepare a sweep transaction to an address you choose.

Who it is for

  • People trying to locate Bitcoin funds from a mnemonic or extended key when the original derivation path or address format is uncertain.
  • Users seeking to move located single-key wallet funds to a chosen destination address.

Documented uses

  • Scan known derivation-path and script-type combinations for funds associated with a mnemonic or extended key.
  • Find UTXOs associated with an xpub.
  • Adjust address and account gap limits or connect to a specified Electrum server.
  • Construct a transaction to sweep located funds to a destination address and optionally broadcast it.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The README limits recovery to single-key wallets; it says a mnemonic alone cannot recover multisig or Lightning funds.
  • An xpub can be used to find UTXOs, but the README describes sweeping funds from mnemonics and xprivs.
  • Broadcasting is separate from transaction creation and requires the --broadcast option.
  • Indy connects to Electrum servers and allows a custom host, port and TCP or SSL protocol.
  • The project is written in Python, uses a CLI, and is licensed under MIT.
