Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to work across a persistent source collection, need answers linked back to passages, or want to derive study and presentation artifacts from the same material.
Who it is for
- Researchers who want to question a persistent collection of documents and links.
- Students who want to turn reading materials into flashcards or quizzes.
- People who prefer to host their notebook and its data on their own machine or server.
Documented uses
- Collect documents, web links, video transcripts, audio and notes in notebooks.
- Ask questions grounded in uploaded material and follow citations to source passages.
- Generate flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, reports, data tables, diagrams, audio overviews and notes from a source collection.
Requirements & limits
The README describes local self-hosting with Docker Desktop and Bun, plus a cloud-server option using cloud Supabase. Local signup uses email and password. An OpenRouter API key is required for chat, embeddings and Studio features.
- The application requires an OpenRouter API key for its AI-powered chat, embeddings and Studio functions.
- Local setup uses Docker Desktop and Bun; the README also documents a server setup using cloud Supabase.
- The documented stack includes Next.js, Supabase, PostgreSQL with pgvector, Drizzle and OpenRouter.
- The repository states that the project is MIT-licensed and written primarily in TypeScript.
- The README says files, text, embeddings and chat history reside in the operator's own storage and database.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up LibreNote AI locally
Install the application and reach its local signup page.
Before you start
- Docker Desktop installed and running
- Bun installed
- A terminal for repository commands
Steps
Clone https://github.com/devyanshyadav/librenote-ai.git and change into the librenote-ai directory.
Run bun run setup.
Open http://localhost:3000 and sign up with email and password.
Expected outcome
The README says setup installs dependencies, starts the local database, builds the app and opens the local web interface.
Guide limitations
- An OpenRouter API key is required to use chat, embeddings and Studio features; setup can be completed without it.
- This recipe covers local setup only; server hosting uses a cloud Supabase project and is described separately in the project documentation.
