Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Bitcoin or Litecoin testnet workflow needs funds delivered through a Lightning channel, or when an operator wants to run a channel-based testnet faucet.

Who it is for

  • Lightning node operators setting up a testnet faucet.
  • Developers testing Lightning channel creation and payment flows on Bitcoin or Litecoin testnets.

Documented uses

  • Provide testnet funds through a newly opened Lightning payment channel.
  • Use the channel for Lightning payments or close it to receive funds on-chain.
  • Build and deploy a faucet alongside a synced lnd node.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the project as MIT-licensed. Building from source requires Go and Glide.

  • The faucet opens a Lightning payment channel instead of sending funds directly on-chain.
  • The documented node compatibility is limited to lnd.
  • Deployment requires a fully synced local lnd node and its public, reachable IP address.
  • The source build uses Go and Glide.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and deploy a Lightning Faucet

Install the faucet from source and deploy it with a synced lnd node.

Before you start

  • Go and Glide
  • A local lnd node that is active and fully synced
  • A public, reachable IP address for the lnd node

Steps

  1. Clone the lightning-faucet repository and change into its directory under $GOPATH/src/github.com/lightninglabs/lightning-faucet.

  2. Run glide install, then go install -v.

  3. From the repository directory, run lightning-faucet --lnd_ip=X.X.X.X, replacing X.X.X.X with the public, reachable IP address of the active lnd node.

Expected outcome

The faucet is deployed with the documented HTTPS configuration, which includes a Let's Encrypt TLS certificate.

Guide limitations

  • The README documents compatibility only with lnd.
  • The faucet's documented distribution method is opening Lightning payment channels, not direct on-chain transfers.
