Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to investigate or build a text-to-music research pipeline and can prepare the embedding and AudioLM training stages it requires.
Who it is for
- Researchers exploring text-audio representation learning for music.
- Developers prototyping prompt-driven music-synthesis applications.
- PyTorch users adapting or training an AudioLM-based music-generation pipeline.
Documented uses
- Train MuLaN on paired audio and text to create joint embeddings.
- Produce namespaced conditioning embeddings for AudioLM’s semantic, coarse and fine transformers.
- Train or fine-tune AudioLM transformers with MuLaN conditioning.
- Generate several music samples from a natural-language description and select a top match with MuLaN.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and released under the MIT license. The README documents installation with pip.
- This is an implementation and training workflow, not a turnkey generation service.
- The documented pipeline depends on trained MuLaN and AudioLM components; training MuLaN requires paired sound-text data.
- AudioLM training instructions are provided by the separate audiolm-pytorch project.
- The example generation path requests multiple candidates and uses MuLaN to select the top match.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the documented MuLaN training stage
Install the package and define the MuLaN audio and text transformers used to learn joint embeddings from paired sound and text.
Before you start
- Python and PyTorch
- Paired sound and text data for training
Steps
Install the package with pip install musiclm-pytorch.
Import MuLaN, AudioSpectrogramTransformer and TextTransformer from musiclm_pytorch.
Instantiate the audio and text transformers and pass them to MuLaN.
Pass paired waveforms and text tokens through MuLaN, calculate the loss and call backward() as shown.
Expected outcome
A configured MuLaN training stage that can learn joint audio-text representations from the supplied pairs.
Guide limitations
- The README says MuLaN must first be trained and refers to using a large collection of sound-text pairs.
- This setup does not train AudioLM or generate music; later stages require a quantizer and trained AudioLM transformers.
