Practical overview
When it fits
Use gac when preparing a Git commit and you want an LLM-generated starting point that you can review or revise before confirming.
Who it is for
- Developers who want contextual commit-message drafts for Git changes.
- Teams or individuals who need commit messages in different languages or formats.
- Developers who want to incorporate commit-message generation into a Git workflow or expose commit tools through an MCP server.
Documented uses
- Generate a commit message from staged code changes.
- Review, edit, reroll or give feedback on a proposed message before committing.
- Choose a message format, language and LLM provider.
- Group related changes into multiple logical commits.
Requirements & limits
The project is an open-source CLI in a public MIT-licensed repository. Its README documents Python 3.10–3.14 and a quick-start using uvx.
- gac requires configuration of a provider, model and language before use.
- The README lists more than 35 provider options, including custom Anthropic- and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
- The default workflow presents the generated message for review; flags can change review, staging and commit behavior.
- The repository documents an MCP server mode in addition to its command-line Git workflow.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
