Practical overview
When it fits
Use Volo when a Wikipedia snapshot is an appropriate knowledge base and you want a locally hosted question-answering workflow that does not depend on continuous internet access.
Who it is for
- People who want to ask questions against a locally stored Wikipedia snapshot.
- Developers who want to route compatible chat clients through a Wikipedia-grounded RAG workflow.
Documented uses
- Ask questions using material retrieved from an offline Wikipedia database.
- Connect an OpenAI-compatible client to Volo's chat-completion workflow.
- Configure the model and Wikipedia database path through config.ini.
Requirements & limits
The project is published as GPL-3.0-licensed software. Its README documents Windows, macOS, and Linux support.
- The selected Wikipedia .zim file is a snapshot; it does not provide live Wikipedia updates.
- The README lists a roughly 55 GB Wikipedia download, 60 GB of disk space, 3 GB VRAM, and a fast GPU as setup guidance.
- The primary model setup documented is Ollama with qwen2.5:3b.
- Open WebUI and other custom interfaces must use non-streaming requests.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Volo with a local Wikipedia snapshot
Install and configure Volo to use a Kiwix Wikipedia database.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later with pip
- Ollama, with the qwen2.5:3b model pulled and its server started
- A Kiwix Wikipedia .zim file; the README lists the English 2024-06 snapshot at about 55 GB
- The README's minimum guidance: 3 GB VRAM, 60 GB disk space, and a fast GPU
Steps
Clone the Volo repository and install its dependencies with pip using requirements.txt.
Start Volo using start.sh on macOS or Linux, or start.bat on Windows, to generate its configuration file.
Set zim_file_path in config.ini to the location of the downloaded .zim file.
Start Volo again using the platform's documented startup method.
Expected outcome
Volo's server is started with the configured local Wikipedia database; the README lists its web UI at http://localhost:3000.
Guide limitations
- The Wikipedia database requires substantial storage; the listed file is about 55 GB.
- The documented hardware guidance calls for a fast GPU and at least 3 GB VRAM.
- The selected .zim file is a snapshot, not a live Wikipedia feed.
Connect Open WebUI to Volo
Use Open WebUI as a client for Volo's OpenAI-compatible local API.
Before you start
- A running Volo server
- Open WebUI
Steps
In Open WebUI's Admin Settings, open Connections and add Volo's API URL: http://localhost:1255/v1.
Leave the API key empty or enter a random string, as the README allows.
Disable streaming in the interface.
Select the volo-workflow model when sending a request.
Expected outcome
Open WebUI sends chat requests through Volo's retrieval workflow and receives a response in OpenAI format.
Guide limitations
- Streaming must be disabled for a custom interface such as Open WebUI.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
